In the Middle Ages, the historical heart of Troyes took the shape of a champagne cork. Its heritage is exceptional: 7 museums, 9 classified churches, and 53 hectares of protected area that constitute the most beautiful ensemble of medieval and Renaissance houses in France!
At the "champagne cork," one can appreciate:
- At the top of the cork: the Cité quarter, clustered around the cathedral and surrounded by water: the houses blend brick and timber, small squares mix with paved alleyways, and medieval shops are both boutiques and workshops.
- In the body of the cork: the St-Jean quarter, where the great Champagne fairs used to take place. Lively and preserved, it retains beautiful Renaissance townhouses and picturesque streets, such as the Alley of Cats, so narrow that the roofs on either side seem to almost touch.
