A Scientific Mission
The Jardin des Plantes in Nantes is not just an amenity; it also has a leading scientific mission. It actively participates in the reintroduction of rare species and is renowned for its work on epiphytes, plants that grow on others without parasitizing them. Its camellia collection is particularly prestigious and admired worldwide. The garden has indeed received the distinction of "Remarkable Garden" partly due to its 800 m² greenhouses, where rare species are cultivated in semi-natural conditions.
A Place for Amenity and Artistic Discoveries
The Jardin des Plantes is not only a scientific space; it is also a place for strolls and relaxation. Whether you seek tranquility or discoveries, the garden offers numerous activities. Younger visitors can marvel at the goat enclosure, which is open each morning, while adults can enjoy the Orange Garden Café, an ideal spot for a gourmet break.
But the garden is also a place of art and creativity. Between 2013 and 2017, Nantes' Nature and Gardens Directorate collaborated with artist Claude Ponti to create surprising installations as part of the Voyage à Nantes. Today, eight permanent works enchant visitors. Among them are the Giant Bench, the Toggobanks, or the Siestobanks, all designed to spark curiosity and interaction. These installations are visible during the summer season, while the Depodépo playground remains accessible year-round for younger visitors.
A Unique Place at the Heart of the City
Located just a stone's throw from the train station, the Jardin des Plantes in Nantes is a true invitation to escape. Whether one seeks the beauty of the landscapes, the shade of a century-old tree, or the richness of biodiversity, this garden is an indispensable place. It perfectly blends science and pleasure for the greatest happiness of the Nantais and visitors alike.
