The Grand-Lieu Lake is an internationally important wetland for its biological richness. Its low water level makes it the largest natural plain lake in France during winter, with a surface area of about 6000 ha compared to 2300 ha in summer (luxuriant particular vegetation; nearly 270 bird species).
2700 hectares are classified as a National Natural Reserve and 650 hectares as a Regional Natural Reserve, which notably prohibits hunting and public access within the reserve to preserve the fauna and flora from disturbance.
