The Grand-Lieu lake is an internationally important wetland for its rich biological diversity. Its low water level makes it the largest natural plain lake in France during winter, with its surface area changing from approximately 6300 ha in winter to 2000 ha in summer (lush vegetation; nearly 300 bird species).
2700 ha are classified as a National Natural Reserve and 650 ha as a Regional Natural Reserve, which prohibits activities such as hunting and public circulation within the reserve, to preserve its fauna and flora from disturbance.
