One of the greatest princes of the early Renaissance, cousin to the kings of France, cultivated the arts as a knight-artist, collected exotic animals, tended his gardens and forests… His private life was here in Baugé, in his warm and refined home.

Founded in 1650 under Louis XIV, the Hotel-Dieu de Baugé welcomed the poor and destitute. The Sisters of Saint Joseph Hospitallers provided physical and spiritual care for 350 years.
How were our ancestors treated by physicians during Louis XIV's reign, the Revolution, before World War I or in the 1960s? The Hotel-Dieu de Baugé has survived all these eras. It tells a fascinating story… of health.
Step into Europe’s finest apothecary!
Classified as a historical monument, the apothecary of the Hotel-Dieu de Baugé, opened in 1675, houses a collection of over 650 jars and boxes, one of the richest of its time. Their mysterious-named contents will amuse both children and adults: dragon’s blood, crayfish eyes, powder of beetles… authentic remedies from an era!
