Overlooking the Loire River, the château de Saumur dominates the town and valley with its octagonal towers visible from a great distance. Built in stages since the end of the 11th century, the château de Saumur served variously as fortress, pleasure residence, residence of city governors, prison, armory and munitions depot.
Today, largely restored, it stands somewhat like a fairy tale castle but the site's fortifications, which predate Vauban's works, remind of its defensive aspect.
The château houses since 1912 the rich collections of the municipal museum, augmented at the end of the 1950s by the donation of the collections of the Musée du cheval. The museum possesses the label "Musée de France". Its collections are very varied (decorative arts, fine arts, ethnology, archaeology, natural sciences) and of high quality.
Its highlights include: ceramics (one of the finest faïence collections in France), tapestries (from the 15th to the 18th century, most classified as Historic Monuments) and, Saumur obliges, horse harness gathering ancient pieces, engravings, veterinary works or maréchalerie.
Each year, a new temporary exhibition is proposed. Contemporary art or original perspective on collections, the visit always proves more surprising and is accompanied by an innovative cultural program.
