DISCOVERY
In 1971, discovery of the Man from Tautavel (-450,000 years) by Professor Lumley's teams.
At the age of twenty, the man from Tautavel measured 1m60. This Homo erectus had all the characteristics of the first Europeans: a receding forehead, a brow ridge above the orbits, prominent cheekbones and a protruding jaw. Although he did not yet master fire, he revealed himself to be an excellent hunter. One might think that he would have chosen the site of the Caune de l'Arago for its privileged location: he could dominate the valley, its water source and consequently his prey.

Museum and shop hours 2026:
The Tautavel Prehistory Museum is not open all year round, please note the following days and hours for individual publics.

1st January : closed
2nd to 4th January : 10h-12h30 and 14h-17h
5th January to 6th February : open only on Saturdays and Sundays: 10h-12h30 and 14h-17h
7th February to 3rd April : open every day: 10h-12h30 and 14h-17h
4th April to 3rd July : open every day: 10h-12h30 and 14h-18h
4th July to 30th August : open every day: 10h-19h
31st August to 1st November : open every day: 10h-12h30 and 14h-18h
2nd November to 18th December : open only on Saturdays, Sundays: 10h-12h30 and 14h-17h
School holidays at the end of the year: 10h-12h30 and 14h-17h (except closed on 24th, 25th and 31st December)
Outside opening hours, the museum remains accessible to groups by reservation.
Duration of visit: minimum 1h30 and cash desk closes 45 mins before closing time of day.
Validity of ticket all day.
