THE DISCOVERY
In 1971, the Tautavel Man (-450,000 years) was discovered by Professor Lumley's team.
At twenty years old, the Tautavel Man measured 1.60 meters. This Homo erectus had all the characteristics of early Europeans: a receding forehead, a bulge above the orbits, prominent cheekbones, and an advanced jaw. Although he did not yet master fire, he proved to be an excellent hunter. One can think that he would have chosen the site of the Caune de l’Arago for its privileged location: it allowed him to dominate the valley, its water source, and consequently his prey.
